Anna-Lou (Annie) Leibovitz is an American portrait photographer, known for her work in Rolling Stone magazine and her portraits of John Lennon, Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, and Jody Foster. Leibovitz was born in Connecticut, USA on October 2, 1949 and still lives at the age of 61. She is a Russian-Jew and learned to use her Judaism in her photography when she spent several months in Amir, Israel when she was 20 years old.
Leibovitz was chief photographer in Rolling Stone from 1972 to 1983, a meesly 10 years. Her portraits were praised for their ability to offer an intimate insight on many celebrities and their personal lives. While working for Rolling Stone, Leibovitz started personal work, which she finds much more personal and enticing.
In the 1980s, Leibovitz started working for Vanity Fair Magazine. She was recognized for her new style of lighting and her use of bold colours and poses. Two of her most famous portraits include Whoopi Goldberg submerged in a bath of milk and Demi Moore naked and holding her pregnant belly.
Leibovitz’s photographs have appeared in Vogue, The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, and ad campaigns for American Express, the Gap, and the Milk Board.
